Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS)

Overview

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is performed with a specialized endoscope fitted with a built-in ultrasound probe. It allows for a more detailed view of the digestive tract and can be performed either through the mouth or anus. An EUS is used to diagnosis conditions causing abdominal pain or unexpected weight loss. It is also used to view known abnormalities in the abdomen. This test can also provide insight into pancreatic conditions when previous tests were inconclusive.

Preparation

It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions for preparations. EUS preps depend on the area being evaluated. For an upper GI EUS, it is normal to not eat or drink anything for six hours prior to the scheduled test time. The same prep used for a colonoscopy is normally ordered for a lower GI EUS.

The Test

Depending on the patient’s personal health, the test may be done under sedation. It is recommended to have a caretaker for the day to drive the patient to and from the the appointment and care for the patient in recovery. It is not uncommon to not remember the first few hours after sedation, it is important to delay the making of important decision until a day after the procedure.
