Why Should You Be Screened For Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Finding and treating colorectal cancer early may prevent death from colon cancer. In fact, when found early, colon cancer is over 90% curable.The American College of Gastroenterology recommends screening for colorectal cancer at age 50 for individuals who are not at increased risk of the disease. A gastroenterologist may recommend earlier screening for individuals with a family history of colon cancer, a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, or other risk factors for colon cancer. A screening colonoscopy is identical to a colonoscopy done to diagnose the source of symptoms.

Open Access Colonoscopy

Carolina Digestive Health Associates offers an Open Access Colonoscopy program to make the screening procedure more accessible to patients. Patients age 50 and older, without significant illnesses (diabetes, cardiac disease, kidney problems, etc.) can schedule a colonoscopy screening visit, usually without a pre-procedure visit.
