The small bowel follow through (SBFT) takes a look at the entire small intestine using x-rays. The SBFT can show a blockage, abnormal growth, or a problem with the way the small intestine is working. You will be required to drink a thick, white, milkshake-like liquid called barium, which coats the inside of your intestine and makes it show up more clearly on x-rays. After drinking the barium, x-ray pictures will be taken of your abdomen at timed intervals. The length of time it takes to complete your exam depends on the time it takes for the barium to pass through your small intestine. It may take as little as one hour, but may well last more than 3 hours. This varies among people. The barium may cause constipation and white-colored stool for a few days after the procedure. Your stomach and small intestine must be empty for the procedure to be accurate, so the night before you will not be able to eat or drink anything after midnight. If your procedure is scheduled in the afternoon, you may have a clear liquid breakfast, Depending on which facility your test will be performed at, there may be other preparation instructions for you to follow; please see ‘Other Instructions’ below. We normally receive results of the test within 7-10 business days. After your physician reviews the report, we will call you with results. |
